Sture Johannesson

Sture Johannesson (1935–2018) was a groundbreaking Swedish artist and graphic designer, known for his work in psychedelic art and his central role in the Swedish underground movement of the 1960s and 70s. Born in Malmö, Johannesson quickly made a name for himself by challenging societal conventions and norms with his controversial and often provocative works. His posters and artworks combined the aesthetics of pop art with political and social messages, often using psychedelic patterns and colors to express his critique of the establishment.

One of his most famous works is the poster "Underground will take over Lunds konsthall" from 1969, which sparked significant debate and became symbolic of the cultural and political upheavals of the time. Johannesson used art as a weapon to promote freedom of speech and as a means to challenge censorship and authority. His work reflects the countercultural movements of the era, and he was a strong advocate for freedom in all its forms.

Johannesson's influence extends beyond his artistic creations. He was one of the first to use computers in his art, making him a pioneer in digital art. Despite facing criticism and censorship at times, his artistic legacy has been celebrated and is now recognized as an important part of Swedish art history.
